Over the last week or two I have slowly noticed increased difficulty using several websites that I use frequently, recently though some websites have completely stopped functioning correctly – I have not been able to login to my HSBC Internet Banking, or deposit money into my SkyBet account (although the latter problem is probably for the best).
After some headaches and a little search around the Chrome settings panel, I realised what was causing these issues.
THE POPUP BLOCKER.
Yes, that's right, the thing that is meant to make your life sexy, is making your life HELL. I actually had to use IE9 to login to my HSBC Internet Banking because that's what they recommended on the phone (and because Firefox is actually 10 times slower and chunkier than IE these days).
I’m not sure if Chrome has only just acquired this popup blocker or if a recent update to it has made it a little block power crazy – but if you turn it off, magically everything starts to work again.
How to disable the popup blocker…
- Click the
at the top right of your Chrome browser window, and click “Settings”. - Scroll to the bottom and click “Show advanced settings”.
- Under “Privacy
”click the button labelled “Content Settings”. - Find the “Pop-ups” section and change the radio so “Allow all sites to show pop-ups” is selected.
Alternatively on step 4, if you click “Manage exceptions…” you can specify sites that are allowed to show pop-ups.
