Social Networking… Networking.

I’ve recently decided (like many other people I suspect) to utilize a few of the best social networking sites rather than just using Facebook. This is for a few reasons:

  • My friends are not just using Facebook, and so I wish to let them know what I’m doing on whatever there using.
  • When posting updates about my websites or products, I can reach a much wider audience.
  • Naturally, as is human nature; I want to annoy as many people and plague as much of my surrounding environment as possible.
  • Google+ is pretty cool but not used much yet.

So I decided I would attempt to use Facebook, Twitter and Google+ as much as possible. Obviously no one wants to switch between all 3 to update their status, so with this in mind I started looking for a solution that would enable me to update one social site and have my update spread around to the other’s.

After much reading I discovered an approach, by using Google+ to make my status updates, I could push those updates over to twitter and then twitter can push them over to Facebook.

Google+ to Twitter

To push your status updates to twitter you will need to use a third part service called “Twitter Mail” by Twitter Counter.

All you need to do is create a Twitter Mail account and attach it to your Twitter account. In the settings make sure it is posting the Subject only and in the field for “cut off phrase” put this: “Dean Williams shared a post with you on Google+” – make sure you replace my name with the name your using on Google+. (this is to stop google sending periodic garbage in with your status updates.

Now on Google+ create a new circle and call it “socialize” or “twitter” or whatever you prefer, add the email address you are given by Twitter Mail as a contact in this circle.

Once you have set this up go ahead and start writing a new post, you will see a “Add more people” link under your text area, which you will need to click and select the twitter circle we just created. You may get a warning asking if you are sure, just click yes.

Now when you post you should now see your post on Twitter!! (Doesn't work on iPod/iPhone see below).

Twitter to Facebook

This one is even easier, to get Twitter to send updates to Facebook, all you need to do is login to your Twitter account and go to your settings page, from here click on the “Applications” tab and click to enable Facebook integration.

And your done. Enjoy your social spamming Smile

iPod/iPhone Problem

If you have the Google+ app for your iPod/iPhone then you may think this is a great solution for you, unfortunately it is not. It does not currently work if you update your status using this app. Hopefully soon it will!
